Abstract

1,177,921. Shaft couplings. C. BARBER. 16 Jan., 1967 [14 Jan., 1966], No. 1763/66. Heading F2U. In a shaft coupling comprising interengageable driving and driven parts 46, 40 adapted to be secured, on respective substantially coaxial shafts, e.g. by keys or set-screws, one part 40 comprises an axially. resilient but torsionally rigid metal bellows 43 connecting, together a .member 42 floatingly interengageable with the part 46, and a member 41 securable to one of the shafts. .A transverse pin 44 in the-member 42 engages a tapered or parallel sided slot 45 in the end of part 46 for torque transmission. Members 41, 42 are soldered within the ends of the bellows, but one or both may alternatively be secured to the outside thereof. Member 42 may be omitted and the transverse pin secured in the end of the bellows (Fig. 3, not shown). In Figs. 1 and 2 (not shown), the interengaging members (12, 19) are formed with tapered or parallel sided tongues (15, 22) and grooves {16, 23( which closely interengage. Where tapered slots are used, the force exerted by the bellows is greater than the axial disengaging forces due to the torque.
