Abstract

1,177,780. Unsaturated esters. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 19 Aug., 1968 [12 Sept., 1967], No. 41594/67. Heading C2C. Olefinic compounds are oxidized to unsaturated esters by contacting with molecular oxygen in the presence of a solution comprising carboxylic acid, a palladium salt, at the most 25% by weight of water, a copper salt, a manganese salt, and an alkali or alkaline earth metal carboxylate, the molar ratio of the alkali and/or alkaline earth metal to manganese being at least 4:1, and the solution being essentially free from halide ions. Olefines such as ethylene or propylene, olefinic esters and alcohols, e.g. allyl acetate and alcohol are mentioned, and the carboxylic acids, e.g. acetic, terephthalic and adipic may form the solvent. Examples describe the preparation of vinyl acetate.
