Abstract
1,154,039. Unsaturated esters. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 7 March, 1967 [22 March, 1966], No. 12571/66. Heading C2C. Unsaturated compounds are oxidized by contacting an olefinic compound and molecular oxygen with a solution comprising a palladous salt, a carboxylic acid, carboxylate ions additional to any provided by the self-ionization of the carboxylic acid, up to 20% by weight of water, at most 0À2 gm. ions of halide per litre of solution, a copper salt and an inorganic redox system with a higher standard oxidation potential than the cuprous-cupric redox couple. Salts of gold, thallium, iridium, cerium, iron and preferably of cobalt particularly carboxylates, halides, or nitrates may be used and preferably the oxidation potential should not be higher than the cobaltous-cobaltic redox couple. Olefinic compounds mentioned are cracked wax α-olefines (C 14 cut), n-hexene-1, n-octene-1, 3 : 5 : 5-trimethyl hexene-1, ethylene, propylene, n-butene-1, isobutene, nbutene-2, n-octene-2, styrene, butadiene, piperylene, allyl acetate and allyl alcohol. Examples describe the oxidation of ethylene to vinyl acetate with acetaldehyde; propylene to allyl acetate with acetone and isopropenyl acetate; and allyl alcohol to acrolein and allyl acetate.
