1,215,031. Aromatic carboxylic acids. PETRO-TEX CHEMICAL CORP. 10 Nov., 1967 [10 Nov., 1966; 1 Dec., 1966], No. 51353/67. Heading C2C. Benzene compounds having at least one CH 3 substituent are oxidized to aromatic carboxylic acids by contacting, in a C 2-4 alkanoic acid or trimethyl acetic acid or methoxyacetic acid or liquid aromatic carboxylic acid, 0À3 to 2 moles per litre of said methyl substituted benzene compound with O 2 in the presence of 0À3-24 grams per litre of Co+ + and/or Co<SP>+++</SP>, 0À05-9À5 grams per litre of an ion or ions of metals having a single valence state greater than 1 and 0À1- 0À5 moles per litre of a methylenic ketone or aldehyde initiator at 70-150‹ C. and 1-50 atmospheres pressure. In examples p-xylene is oxidized to terephthalic acid.
