Abstract

1,140,913. Phenols. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 16 Sept., 1966 [4 Oct., 1965], No. 41992/65. Heading C2C. Aromatic hydrocarbons are oxidized to the corresponding phenols by reacting with hydrogen peroxide in the presence of a catalyst comprising at least one metal of Groups I B and VIII of the Periodic Table, transition metal ions and a liquid reaction medium containing a dissolved carboxylic acid. Suitable aromatic hydrocarbons for use as starting materials are, for example, benzene, biphenyl or naphthalene or their alkyl substituted derivatives e.g. toluene. If desired the hydrogen peroxide may be formed in situ by the combination of hydrogen and oxygen in the presence of the catalyst used for the oxidation step. The preferred metals from Groups I B and VIII are gold, palladium, platinum and rhodium. The preferred carboxylic acids are aliphatic monocarboxylic acids having up to 5 carbon atoms and where such an acid is not stronger than acetic acid it is preferred that another acid which is stronger than acetic acid, e.g. sulphuric acid, nitric acid, phosphoric acid or a sulphonic acid should be present. Suitable transition metals are, for example, iron, nickel, cerium, cobalt, manganese, vanadium and tin, preferably iron. In the examples (a) benzene is oxidized to phenol; (b) naphthalene is oxidized to α-naphthol; and (c) toluene is oxidized to cresols. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 1,041,046.
