Abstract
Benzoic acid is made by oxidising cumene by means of oxygen or an oxygen-containing gas in the presence of an oxidation catalyst, the reaction being carried out in a liquid medium, which is stable under the oxidation conditions used, and n the conjoint presence of a metal ion and a bromide ion. The liquid medium may be a carboxylic acid such as benzoic acid, acetic acid or propionic acid. The catalyst may be a metallic oxide or salt, e.g. manganese acetate or cobalt acetate. The salt may comprise both the catalytic metal ion and the bromide ion, e.g. manganese bromide, or cobalt bromide. When benzoic acid is used as the liquid medium, the process may be integrated with that for the production of terephthalic acid. Benzene is propylated to cumene, which is converted into benzoic acid by the process of the invention. The benzoic acid is then converted into terephthalic acid, via the potassium salt; the byproduct of this step being benzene which is recycled to the propylation step. In an example, oxygen is led, at the rate of 5 litres per hour, for 10 hours into a mixture of cumene (1 part), benzoic acid (5 parts), manganese bromide (0,005 parts) and cobalt bromide (0,005 parts) maintained under reflux. The yield of benzoic acid is 90%. Specification 833,438 is referred to.
