Abstract

1,177,550. Block polymers. REXALL DRUG & CHEMICAL CO. 20 Dec., 1967 [8 Dec., 1966], No. 55995/67. Heading C3P. A block copolymer comprises (a) a crystalline propylene homopolymer or block or random copolymer with ethylene block and (b) a polar comonomer polymer block wherein the comonomer has the formula where R is hydrogen or a methyl group, R 1 is an alkylene radical containing from 1 to 8 carbon atoms and R 2 and R 3 are each hydrogen or a C 1-4 alkyl group or a mixture thereof with (meth)acrylic acid or ester, acrylonitrile or styrene. The polymers may be obtained by sequential polymerization in the presence of a Ziegler catalyst, preferably including the step of treating the propylene polymer block with oxygen and ammonia or an amine prior to formation of the polymer block (b). In the examples, polypropylene/poly-(dimethyl aminoethyl methacrylate), polypropylene/polyethy. lene/poly-(dimethyl aminoethyl methacrylate), and polypropylene/poly-(methyl aminoethylacrylate) block copolymers are produced using AlCl 3 .3.TiCl 3 /(C 2 H 5 ) 2 AlC1 catalysts and hydrogen, the first formed polypropylene block being treated with ammonia or ammonia and oxygen. The resulting polymers are in some cases melt spun and dyed, or compounded with polypropylene.
