Abstract

1,177,352. Brakes for disc record players; back-spacing and replay. DISCATRON Ltd. 7 Feb., 1968 [11 Nov., 1966], No. 50614/66. Heading G5R. Record-playing apparatus comprises a motordriven wheel located in the transmission for drive to the record disc and brake means for immobilizing this driven wheel. Preferably the transmission includes a series of wheels and the brake means are effective on the final wheel. As shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the record player includes a casing having a slot 16, Fig. 2, into which a record disc 15 is inserted. When a start button 11 is depressed the record disc is engaged by a spigot 105, Fig. 2, on one side and by idler wheels 103, 104 and a rubber-edged driving wheel 101, Fig. 1, on the other. A driving motor 110, Fig. 1, is switched on at the same time. A stylus assembly 32 is pivoted until the stylus makes contact with the disc, and is then moved radially of the disc in association with fixed guide rods 30, 31 during play by engagement of the stylus with the record groove. When playing of the record disc is finished, the disc is disengaged, the motor is stopped, and the stylus is disengaged and returned to its starting position-all automatically. When a reject button 13 is depressed during playing, the same actions as have just been described take place. These features and operation are substantially as disclosed in Specification 1,094,173. Brake features.-A pause button 12, Figs. 1 and 5, is now added which, when depressed, rotates an L-shaped lever 130, 125, Fig. 5, about a pivot 121 to apply a rubber brake 132 to a wheel 100, Figs. 1, 5, and to withdraw (against the force of a spring 116), a jockey-wheel 112 from contact with the motor spindle 111 and the wheel 100 (all as shown in Fig. 5). Wheel 100 is integral with driving wheel 101, Fig. 1, and constitutes the final wheel of the transmission. This pause condition is operative only as long as the button 12 remains depressed. Preferably a motor switch 140 of the kind which is operated to make or break the circuit by alternate operations involving repeat strokes in the same direction, is coupled to the pause button 12. Then when the button is first depressed, the motor is switched off and wheel 100 is braked, whereupon the button may be released. To resume play-back the button is depressed and released once more. Back-spacing and replay.-When a replay button 10, Figs. 1 and 2, is depressed, a rod 25, cranked at both ends and having the left-hand end extending at 26 through a side plate 28, is rotated and moved to the left by travel of its end down one edge 47 and along the bottom of a cam slot 38. By this action the rod first contacts and then pushes outwards a spring finger 60, Fig. 7, thus raising the stylus away from the disc 15, and then moves the stylus assembly 32 parallel to the disc, in a radially outward direction, by frictional contact between a rubber sleeve 34 on rod 25 and a lug 62 on finger 60. When the button is released the end of the rod is spring-urged upwards along edge 49 and along the top of the cam slot 38, the first phase lowering the stylus into the record groove again, and the second phase restoring rod 25 longitudinally to its original position. Stylus pre-setting.-The stylus assembly includes, as shown, a pointer 70 associated with a fixed scale 71. After removing a hinged or slidable window, either finger 60 or finger 70 may be used to shift the stylus assembly to a pre-selected position before play-back, whereupon the start button may be depressed. The claims of the present Specification are concerned with the brake and drive-disconnecting features. The particular description is repeated in Specification 1,177,353, but the claims of that Specification are concerned with the back-spacing features.
