Abstract

350,951. Stopping gramophones automatically. CROSBY, S., 13, Camac Road, Twickenham, Middlesex. March 17, 1930, No. 8585. [Class 40 (ii).] Relates to automatic means for stopping a gramophone upon the completion of a record by means of a member which is rocked by a cam driven with the record into the path of a second cam similarly driven but is removed from the latter cam by the traverse of the sound-box, and when this traverse ceases, the second cam operates the member and applies a brake or switches a driving motor off. According to the invention, the aforesaid member is rocked about a pivot by the first cam and is displaced at right-angles to the rocking movement by the other cam. As shown, the pivoted member 9 has a forked end embracing a disc 7 mounted on the turntable spindle and provided with two cams 8, 10. A lever arm 3 is driven frictionally by another lever arm 2 mounted on the same pivot and connected by a pin-and-slot joint to the tonearm 1. A lug 4 on the lever arm 2 bears on a slide 6, and when the tone-arm 1 is in the starting position, Fig. 1, pushes the slide 6 against a spring 5, so that the end 6a of the slide lies beyond the end of the left prong 9a of the fork of the member 9. During the playing of a record, the cam 8 periodically bears on the right prong of the member 9 and rocks that member to the left, but the member is at once returned to the right by the lever arm 3 driven bv the movement of the tone-arm in the clockwise direction. When this traverse ceases at the end of a record, the member 9 remains in the position given to it by the cam 8, and the cam 10 then rides over and depresses the left prong 9a. Meanwhile, the slide 6 has been gradually moved by its spring 5 and the end 6a of the slide which is thicker has become interposed between the left prong 9a and a member 11, so that when this left prong is depressed by the cam 10 it depresses the end of the slide 6 and the member 11, which opens a motor switch or applies a brake 12, Fig. 3, to a brake wheel 13.
