AU'EOIJLELTIC STOPPING AND STARTING ATTACHMENT FOR PHGNOGRAPES.
a ilication filed A 111 8. P1
To all 207mm wm come m Be it known that l, Fnnnnnion Eran earn, a citizen'of thellnited States, resiting at Savannah, in the county or Ghatham and State of Georgia, have invented or discovered certain new and useful improve- .1e11ts in Automatic Stopping and Starting Attaclnnents for Phonographs, of which the following a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to an automatic stopping device for phonographs of that class carrying disk records, and has for its object to provide device of simple construction whereby when the end of the record is reached the rotation of the turn-table bearing the record will be automatically stopped by a brake applied thereto, and which brake will be released when the tone arm is swung outward or reset for the next operation. To his end the invention comprises a pinion carried by the shaft of the turn-table which carries the record, said pinion meshing with gear wheel provided with resetting cam and a scroll cam. Frictionally attached to the base of the tone arm is a band which is suitably connected to the rear arm of a lever carrying at its forward end a pin to be engaged, at propertimes, by thesaid resetting cam and scroll cam, said lever controlling a brake device which, through the action or said scroll cam and lever, will be thrown into contact with the periphery of the record carrying turn-table to stop the rotation of the latter when the end oi: the record has been reached, all as will hereinafter more fully appear.
in the accompanying drawing Fig. 1 is a plan view or" preferred embodiment of the present invention, and Fig. 2 is a side view oi the same.
Referring to the drawing, 12 denotes a turn-table, adapted to carry a and .13 is a rotating shaft to be operated by a spring motor in the usual manner and to which shaft said turn-table is fixed. A so fixed to the shaft 1;; a pinion 14: meshing with a gear wheel 15 provided with a scroll cam 16 and with a resetting cam 17.
Attached to the upright part 18 of the tone arm 18- is a friction band 19, which, by means of an adjustable screw 20. may be made to embrace the said upright part of the tone arm with any desired degree of tightness. Carried by'the friction band 19 disk record 1922. Serial H0.
is a lug 21 having a slot 22. Pivoted to the table the phonograph, as by screw 23, is a lever 2-1: ovidcd at its rear end with a. pin 2-? received loosely in a slot 22 in the lug 21, 'aid lever having at its "forward end a (icpe.-ding pin :26 to be engaged at timesby the scroll cam 16 and resetting cam 1?. Pivotally ached to the lever 2% is a brake lcx or 27 ving at one end a suitable brake 28., C ne arin ot the said bralre lever isconnccted by a spring 2 with the said lever 24;, 1 spring normally tending to hold the said d t to or said brake lever is extended rearward so that it may, at a proper time, be engaged bv a lug or projection 31 on the base or upright portion 18 of the tone arm 18 The operation of the machine is as follows: lVhen the turn-table 12, carrying the disk record, is in rotation the tone arm will move inward slowly over the record in the usual manner. The rotation 01'? the turntable shaft 13, carrying the pinion 1 1, will cause a slower rotation of the gear-wheel 15 carrying the cams 16 and 17. The slow turning movement of the base portion 18 of the tone arm will impart a corresponding movement to the friction band 19 carrying the lug 21. When the lower wall of the slot 22 in the lug 21 (looking at Fig. 1) is in engagement with the pin near the rear end 0% the lever 2i the said lever will be held in contact with a fixed stop pin 32 on the phonograph table, and in this position of said lever the pin 26 carried by said lever will as engaged by the resettingcam 17' when, in the rotation of the gear wheel 15, said cam comes opposite said pin. This engagement of said cam 17 with the pin 26 will move the longer arm of said lever 24 inward slightly away from the stop pin 32, causing the pin 25 on the shorter arm of said lever, through the lug 21, to turn the friction band 19 slightly on the upright portion 18 of the tone arm 18 in a direction. opposite the turning movement oi the tone arm, thus moving the tt'orward or longer arm of the lever 24: away "from the stop pin 32, and far enough inward so that the pin 26 would be in a position to be engaged by the scroll cam 16 at the next rotation of the gear wheel 15 it said lever remained in the position to which it is thus turned by the said resetting cam; But as the tone' arm will.
brake arm in yielding Contact with a stop ii: e he said lever 24. The other arm still continue to move inward over the disk record until the reproduction of said record is completed, the slow turning movement of the friction band 19 with the tone arm will gradually, by the lug 21 and pin 25, and during the next rotation of the gear wheel 15, return the lever 24- to its former position in contact with the stop pin 32, thus carrying the pin 26 out of range of the scroll cam 16. This operation will be repeated during the reproduction oi the record, but whenthe end 01 the record has been reached and the turning movement of the tone arm the lever will remain in the inward position to which the resetting cam 17 last moved it, and in this inward position the pin 26, carried by said lever will be in position to be engaged by the scroll cam 16 when said scroll cam next reaches said pin 26. This engagement of the said scroll cam with said pin,as the gear wheel 15 continues to rotate, will impart a movement to the lever 24, to a 7 position at'or near the pin 33, and suflicient to bring the-brake 28, moving with SElzlti lever, into contact with the periphery of the turn-table and thus arrest the movement thereof. When the machine is to be again started and the tone is moved outward over the disk record'the lug or projection 31 on-the upright part of said tone arm will engage the tail of the brake lever 27 and thus release the brake from the turn-table. Thus it will be understood that the invention provides an efficient automatic brake mechanism by which the rotation of the recordcarrying turn table will be arrested when the reproduction of the record has been comi u plet'ed, the constructlon beln such that the brake will be released, to permit the machine to start again, when thetone arm is reset to repeat the reproduction of the record or to play a new record.
