1422670 Control of single play gramophone SONY CORP 20 Dec 1973 [29 Dec 1972] 59090/73 Heading G5R In a single play gramophone the motor is switched on by manual movement of the pick-up arm towards the turntable and a cam gear coupled to a turntable pinion at the end of record play controls a braked return of the arm to its rest during the first 180 degrees rotation of the gear and switch off of the motor as it returns to its initial position after 360 degrees of rotation. As the pick-up arm is moved inwardly to locate its stylus in a record start groove, switch actuating member 13 on bell crank 10 fixed to the pick-up arm shaft 4 moves off actuator 27<SP>1</SP> so that switch 27 connects power supply to the turntable drive motor. As the stylus enters the run out groove at the end of record play pin 17 on sector plate 11, which is spring coupled to the bell crank lever, engages end 41<SP>1</SP> of detector rod 41 to shift clutch elements 39, 40 so that end 40<SP>1</SP> of element 40 moves into the path of and is engaged by member 37 rotating with the turntable whereby cam gear 32 is angularly displaced into drive engagement with pinion 36. The first 180 degrees of movement of the cam gear turns main lever 21 clockwise whereby part 21b of the lever moves under rod 7 so that arm lifter 8 raises the tone arm to disengage the stylus from the record. Thereafter pad 24<SP>1</SP> on the lever engages pin 18 on plate 11 to move the pick-up arm outwardly, this action being opposed by brake shoe 25<SP>1</SP> on lever 23 which is coupled to lever 21 by spring 29. The shoe engages a brake band 20 on the pick-up arm shaft. The final movement of the arm to its rest position is resiliently controlled by loading of spring 15. During the final 180 degrees of movement lever 21 is swung anti-clockwise to restore it and the lever 23 to their initial position and during the last part of this movement the abutment 27 is engaged by member 13 to switch off the motor and an edge part 40a of the clutch element 40 is engaged by surface 37a on member 37 to restore the elements 39 and 40 to their initial positions.
