Abstract

1,177,245. Sponges. AMERICAN CYANAMID CO. 28 Feb., 1967 [2 June, 1966], No. 9546/67. Heading A4V. [Also in Divisions A5, B8 and C5] A surgical scrub sponge-antibacterial detergent combination comprises a sponge having at least one surface of sufficient pore size and stiffness for effective scrubbing but free from abrasive properties impregnated with a volume of an antibacterial, non-irritating liquid detergent of low alkalinity, sufficient for a surgical scrub. Preferably the sponge is a laminated polyester polyurethane foam sponge in which one lamination has pore sizes capable of retaining the required amount of detergent solution and at least one surface lamination has larger pore sizes and is of a stiffness suitable for scrubbing but is free from abrasive properties. A suitable sponge comprises a rectangular sheet of polyester polyurethane foam of about 60 pores to the inch having laminated on opposing sides two thin layers of polyester polyurethane that on the one side having 10 pores to the inch and that on the other side having about 20 pores to the inch impregnated with a soap solution containing hexachlorophene as the bactericidal constituent, which is cut into individual sponges approximately 2 x 3 inches in area and 1.25 inches thick.
