Abstract

1,135,264. Cleaning pads; synthetic sponge. COLLO RHEINCOLLODIUM KOLN G.m.b.H. WERK HERSEL. 21 Jan., 1966 [23 Jan., 1965; 5 March, 1965; 15 March, 1965; 4 June, 1965; 6 Nov., 1965], No. 2912/66. Headings A4F and A4V. [Also in Divisions A5, C3, C5 and G6] An agent for mechanically removing radioactive contaminants from the skin or other surfaces comprises a foamed material having pores of size 0.2 to 3mm. and openpored on at least one surface. When rubbed on the skin or other object, the surface layer crumbles away, carrying with it the radioactive contaminants. The foamed material may be polyurethane, polystyrene, cellulose acetate, polyvinyl chloride, synthetic or natural rubber, phenolic resin, slag foam, or glass foam, and may be in the form of a one-piece article or as granules or a powder. The granules or powder may be mixed with water and a cellulose thickening agent or with polysilicic acid, colloidal clay, or a metal hydroxide to form a paste which may be applied to the skin as a protective layer or to remove contamination; the paste may also include detergents, soaps, glycerol, or emulsions of petroleum, turpentine, rubber, or cod liver oil. Alternatively, the granules or powder are mixed with a film-forming agent or with an ion exchanger or adsorbent or absorbent material, several of which materials are specified. Construction of articles. A material according to the invention is shown in the drawings associated with (a) a larger pore sponge containing in its pores a paste or protective cream described above; (b) a flexible perforated foil or fabric enclosing the paste or protective cream; (c) a container for the porous material in granular or powder form and a container for flat sponges to apply the material after mixing with a liquid; (d) a plastic vessel with a sealable opening containing paste or dry granules or powder. Tests are described showing the effectiveness of a foamed polyurethane in removing radioactivity from the human skin.
