Abstract

A doormat for use at entrances on exits where it is desirable to reduce the passage of germs and bacteria carried on the footwear of pedestrians using the doorway. This applied particularly to areas where sterile conditions are to be maintained in hospitals, and for the protection of large gatherings of people, such as in schools and places of entertanment. The doormat has a tray to contain liquid disinfectant and the tray had a covering surface on which footwear can be scraped clean. Within the tray means are provided to release disinfectant into the covering surface when pressure is applied to the surface. Preferably, the disinfectant is stored in a foam rubber or foam plastics in the tray. The sponge released disinfectant into a covering surface when a pedestrian stands on the mat. The covering surface may be in foam rubber or foam plastic or textile material. The tray is provided with a removable plug for topping-up the disinfectant as its level becomes too low.
