Abstract

1,176,836. Shrinkproofing wool. COMMONWEALTH SCIENTIFIC & INDUSTRIAL RESEARCH ORGANISATION. 15 March, 1967 [30 March, 1966], No. 12216/67. Heading D1P. Wool fibres are shrinkproofed by subjecting them to the action of an electric discharge and then treating them with a synthetic polymer. The electric discharge treatment may be carried out at or below atmospheric pressure for 10 seconds to 5 minutes using voltages of 10,000-100,000 at frequencies of 50 to 500,000 cycles per second. The treatment may comprise corona discharge or a discharge in a preselected atmosphere where chemically active compounds or radicals are produced close to the wool. The discharge treatment may be applied to loose wool and the polymer applied later by spraying on to the loose wool or impregnating a woven or knitted fabric made therefrom, or the discharge treatment may be applied to woollen fabrics immediately after scouring or dyeing and the polymer then applied as the next step in processing. The polymer which may be applied in the form of an aqueous dispersion in an amount of 0.5-10% by weight of the wool may be a polyethyleneimine, polyamide-epichlorohydrin resin, polyolefin, polyacrylate or melamine-formaldehyde resin.
