Abstract
1,176,199. Wave-energy position finding. R. D. EVANS. 4 Dec., 1967, No. 55106/67. Heading H4D. In an aircraft guidance system three waveenergy detectors are located at different positions on the aircraft, the outputs of the detectors are paired to produce two intensity ratio measurements, and the measurements are utilized to determine the range and bearing of the aircraft from the source of the waves. The waves may be radio waves, compressional waves, invisible or visible light, gamma rays etc.; a laser may be employed. The " source " may be self-emitting or a transponder. In an embodiment, detectors Ia, Ib, Ir on an aircraft are connected to ratio circuits 3, 5, the outputs from which are fed to an X-Y plotter 2 to afford range and bearing information. By applying the output of a subtracting circuit 11 to the ordinate of the plotter and the output of a summing circuit 13, a convenient measure of range and bearing is obtained. A conventional computer may be added to give range and bearing indications on respective meters 15, 17. Elevation angle data is derived utilizing a fourth detector 14 spaced below the plane defined by detectors Ia, Ib, Ic. Differentiation may be added to give rate information. The law of wave attenuation may not be known: it may be computed from a quoted equation when detectors Ia, Ib, Ic are made almost collinear or correction for attenuation may be made by utilizing a further detector. Extraneous background or noise effects can be removed utilizing a further detector. In the above the detectors are fixed on the aircraft, they may be movable as illustrated to afford a check on position data measurement or for correcting the effect of extraneous waves. Source strength may also be measured.
