Abstract

1332581 Measurement of filler content of paper OSTERREICHISCHE STUDIENGESELLSCHAFT FUR ATOMENERGIE GmbH 18 Aug 1971 [18 Aug 1970] 38838/71 Heading G1A Apparatus for measuring the filler content of paper comprises a radio-active source 6 shielded at 7 from a scintillation counter 4, the paper being passed as a continuous web over a metal coated roller 3 which provides a reflective surface for radiation in a particular measuring range. Pulse height analysis is carried out on detected radiation in two radiation energy ranges, Figs. 2, 3 (not shown), one (range II) in which radiation detected is that which is reflected elastically from the coating 2 and is absorbed by the paper filler, and another (range I), in which radiation detected is that back-scattered by the filler material itself. The energy ranges which may be single energy values, are defined in pulse height analyser circuit 8. The outputs are fed to differencing circuits 9 which subtract therefrom zero values taken without paper in the radiation path and stored, and the signals then combined at 10 in a summing, multiplying or dividing circuit to obtain a signal representative of filler content which is indicated at 11. The source 6 may be Fe-55 providing y-rays, and the detector an Na(Tl) crystal and photo-multiplier combination provided with a beryllium window. The roller coating may be copper, aluminium or plastics material. Filler materials which may be determined are exemplified. Compensation for source decay may be provided e.g. by use of a specialized circuit at 10. Both direct intensities and integrated values may be measured in the two ranges.
