Abstract

1,175,947. Ultrasonic transducers. ELECTROMECHANICAL DESIGN Ltd. 21 Aug., 1968, No. 39942/68. Heading H4J. An ultrasonic transducer for repelling rodents, comprises an annular piezo-electric crystal 1 having electrodes 2 on its inner and outer surfaces and arranged to vibrate in the circumferential mode, and a radiating member 4 in the form of a cup fitted in the annulus, support means 5-7 for the transducer being provided at the bottom of the cup. The crystal is of barium titanate, lead zirconate or other polarized polycrystalline material and has silvered surfaces 2. The frequency of vibration of the crystal is arranged to be slightly (5%) higher than the final desired frequency of the transducer (20 kc./s.) to allow for the effect of the mass of air acting on the cup. The cup is of thermosetting plastics material and forms an interference fit in the annulus, final tuning being by grinding the rim of the open end of the cup. The support means is a bracket 5, bolt 6 and resilient washer 7 attached at a node (the centre of the base of the cup). In an alternative support arrangement designed to enhance the circumferential vibrational mode by restricting longitudinal vibration of the crystal 1, Fig. 2 (not shown), a plastic plate (8) is provided to bear on the base of the crystal. Two cups may be secured together coaxially on a common support to face in opposite directions, each being associated with an annular crystal.
