Abstract

924,587. Piezo-electric transducers. CLEVITE CORPORATION. July 18, 1961 [July 27, 1960], No. 25976/61. Class 40 (4). In a piezo-electric transducer, intended primarily for sub-aqueous use, two dish-shaped housing sections 10, 11 are held together by a bolt 30, preferably of nylon, to apply a compressive bias to an expander element 20, which element prevents the two housing sections from coming into contact with each other during operation. The element 20 preferably consists of two annular rings 21, 22 of barium titanate or lead zirconate titanate mounted end to end and connected electrically in series or in parallel, as desired. The housing sections are of relatively stiff material such as aluminium or plastics material and the bolt 30 is less stiff than the element 20. The housing sections move as pistons for frequencies up to 15 kc./sec. Sealing means 36, such as a rubber band, excludes dirt and water.
