Abstract
1,175,511. Metal phosphides. ALBRIGHT & WILSON (MFG.) Ltd. 11 Jan., 1967 [10 Jan., 1966], No. 1127/66. Heading C1A. A metal phosphide is prepared by introducing a molten metal into the top of a tower and reacting it with phosphorus vapour. The metal may be sprayed into a tower containing an atmosphere of P vapour from a melting pot with a perforated base, and the product collected at the foot of the tower which may be heated. Alternatively, converging jets of metal, P vapour, and inert gas may be directed down a tower with a refractory lining, and the product withdrawn from the foot of the tower, cooled and separated from the gas, which may be recycled. (In this case the metal may vaporize.) The towers may be maintained at 400‹ or 500‹C. by passing hot air through heating jackets. The pressure may be at least atmospheric, and the vapour of white phosphorus may be used. The metal may be Zn, Cu, Mg, Al, Fe, Ca, Na, K, Sn, or Ni; only Zn is exemplified.
