The invention comprises a #-thioether-thiocarboxylic acid ester of the general formula prepared by reacting a trithio-o-formic acid ester of the general formula with a ketene of the general formula in the presence of at least 0À05% by weight, calculated on the ester, of, as catalyst, a mineral acid or a Friedel-Crafts catalyst at a temperature within the range of from - 80‹ to 200‹ C., X being -SR, or -CR<SP>1</SP> 2 -CO-SR and each R, which may be the same or different, being a branched or unbranched optionally substituted alkyl radical and each R<SP>1</SP>, which may be the same or different, being a hydrogen or chlorine atom or an alkyl radical. Preferably the radicals R each contain not more than 12 carbon atoms. The process described above may be carried out in the gas or liquid phase, either continuously or discontinuously. If the process is carried out in solution any inert solvent may be used, for example, an ether, a chlorinated hydrocarbon, a hydrocarbon, a carboxylic acid alkyl ester, acetic anhydride, nitrobenzene or a silicon tetraalkylate.
