Abstract

1,174,976. Marking device; inking apparatus. KWIKMRK Inc. 28 Feb., 1967 [5 Aug., 1966], No. 9471/67. Heading B6C; A marking device and associated inking apparatus comprises a marking head, an inking roller movable into and out of contact with printing elements carried on the head, a rotary ink supply device mounted in the path of movement of the inking roller and means for accurately locating the rotary ink supply device with respect to the inking roller. Fig. 2 illustrates a device, e.g. for marking cans in which a marking head 8 carrying printing elements 12 on belts 10 is vertically reciprocated by a solenoid device (14) (Fig. 1, not shown). An inking roller 16 is mounted on a shaft 18 between a pair of arms 20 pivoted at 22 to the main frame 6; studs 28 mounted on plates (26) attached to the head 8 ride in vertical slots 30 in the frame 6 and in curved slots 34 in the arms 20; thus as the head reciprocates vertically, the inking roller 16 oscillates between the full- and broken-line positions in Fig. 2. In the latter position it contacts an absorbent ink supply roller 36 which is continuously rotated on shaft 38 by a reduction geared motor (56) (Fig. 3, not shown). The roller 36 is carried on a mount 42 which can be removed completely from the marking device and positioned above a separate ink reservoir for recharging the ink Figs. 4 and 5 (not shown). The mount 42 has a rear wall 44 carrying a threaded stud 46 which projects through a slot 48 in the rear wall 50 of the frame 6 and is adjustably secured by a wing nut 52; precise positioning is obtained by abutting the mount 42 against the underside 66 of a bracket 60 which is itself vertically adjustable in the frame 6 by means of threaded bolts 62 lying in slots (64), Fig. 3 (not shown) in the bracket 60.
