Abstract

1,174,933. Moulding concrete building panels. JOHN LAING RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT Ltd. 18 Dec., 1967 [21 Oct., 1966], No. 47122/66. Heading B5A. In a method of moulding a composite concrete building panel, a facing layer is cast and compacted by vibration in a horizontal position and then, while still green, is bonded under pressure to a core to produce a predetermined degree of penetration of the layer into the core. A mould assembly for effecting the method includes a frame 17, 20. Supporting a mould box 10 and hinged lid 11, the latter being supported in the open position by posts 22. Opposed mould sides 16 are adjustable by screws 24 to closely receive the lid and allow it to penetrate into the mould a predetermined amount governed by adjustable stops 26. A mix for producing a facing layer is supplied to the mould 10 and to a correspondingly shaped cavity in the plate 27 of the lid, and both layers are compacted by vibrators 19. The mould 10 is then completely filled with core concrete and the lid, with the facing layer in the green state is swung over to close the mould, pressure is applied to the concrete by joists 28 and clamping bolts 30. The cast panel is removed after raising the mould assembly, which is hinged at one end to a vertical position. The moulding spaces may be lined, e.g. by plastic sheets or textile panels, to impart a desired pattern on the panel surfaces; a parting agent may be applied to the lining. A power operated mould is described in which two adjacent walls can be swung down by pneumatic means to a horizontal position enabling the mould base to be removed with the moulded panel thereon and replaced by a fresh one.
