Abstract
1,174,760. Nitrofuran derivatives. SOC. FARMACEUTICI ITALIA. 23 Jan., 1969 [26 Jan., 1968], No. 3905/69. Heading C2C. Novel 5-nitrofuran derivatives of Formula I in which R is H or C 1-6 alkyl and R<SP>1</SP> is H, or R and R<SP>1</SP> together form a ring of 5 or 6 atoms, are prepared by reacting an amino-acid of Formula II with p-nitrophenyl chloroformate in an inert organic solvent at - 20 to + 30 C. to give a carbamate of Formula III reacting this carbamate with hydrazine hydrate to give a 3-amino-hydantoin derivative of Formula IV and reacting this hydantoin with 5-nitro-2- furaldehyde. Antibacterial and antiprotozoal compositions comprise a compound of Formula I together with a pharmaceutical carrier.
