Abstract

1310676 Nitrofuran derivatives CIBAGEIGY AG 9 June 1970 [10 June 1969] 29339/69 Heading C2C [Also in Division A5] Novel compounds of Formula I: in which R is a C 1-4 alkyl, C 2-4 alkenyl or C 5-7 cycloalkyl group which is substituted by 1 to 3 halogen (Cl, Br or I) atoms, are prepared by (a) reacting 5 - hydroxymethyl - 3 - (5 - nitro - 2- furfurylideneamino) - 2 - oxazolidinone with an acylating agent containing the structure -CO.R, or (b) nitrating a compound of Formula II: Compounds of Formula II are prepared by acylating 3-(2-furfurylideneamino)-5-hydroxymethyl-2-oxazolidinone with an appropriate acylating agent. Compounds I have antimicrobial activity and may be used in pharmaceutical compositions or to protect organic materials from microbial attack.
