A planar bracket for assembly on a wallboard has an edge for engaging the front face of the wallboard and a hooked end with a tip for piercing the wallboard so that an edge of the hooked end engages the rear face of the wallboard, the bracket being laterally stabilised by a support member which engages the front face of the wallboard and has a slot to receive a part of the bracket adjacent to wallboard engaging edge. In one embodiment, Figs 2, 4, a sheet metal shelf bracket B-1 has an upwardly directed rear end hook 18 with a pointed tip 22, the hook 18 being passed through a wallboard W and the bracket rotated in a vertical plane so that parallel edges 20 and 16 respectively engage the rear and front faces 13, 12 of the wallboard W. A planer clip 25 has a slot 26 and is fitted into a slot 24 in the bracket B-1 prior to passing the hook 18 through the wallboard W, the clip 25 serving to bear on the wallboard W and stabilise the bracket B-1 The hook 18 may cut its own slot 31 in the wallboard W with or without a pilot hook 28. The clip 25 may have teeth (27, Fig. 5) which press into the wallboard W. the shelf S has underside grooves 32 engaged by the upper edge of the bracket. In a modified shelf bracket, Figs. 13, 16, a shim channel 50 is fitted over a rear edge 16 of the bracket when the bracket is carried by a reduced thickness wallboard W. In another embodiment, Fig. 6, the bracket B-2 is in the form of a double hook 36, 37 of sheet metal. A pair of planer clips 40 are similar to the clips 25. A further, planar clip 41 with a slot 42 is engaged in use in an upper slot 38 in the bracket to lie between the upper clip 40 and the wallboard W. A modified clip (46, Figs. 9, 10) serving the function of the clip 41 has a pair of mutually divergent wings 49 formed as hooks.
