Abstract
Support members for racking structures comprise first legs (30a, 30b, 32d 32c) adapted to be inserted through one of the apertures and strut and to engage one side of the strut above or below said aperture, supplementary legs (54, 34b, 34d, 35c) adapted to transmit downward loading on the support member to an opposite side of the strut below the aperture, and engagement portions (36a, 36b, 36d, 36e) which when the support member is engaged within an aperture of a strut, extends generally upwardly, over which a complementary aperture of the shelf may be engaged to retain the shelf in a desired position in relation to the racking structure. <IMAGE>
Description
Title: "Improvements relating to racking structures"
Description of Invention
This invention is concerned with improvements relating to racking structures, particularly of the kind (hereinafter referred to as being of the kind specified) comprising a plurality of upright members or struts, at least one shelf, and a plurality of support members or clips adapted to be engaged within apertures of the struts and by which the shelf may be supported between the struts.
In particular, the invention is an improvement in or modification of the invention the subject of our co-pending Application No. 8712259, the disclosure of which is deemed to be included within the present specification.
In the invention the subject of said co-pending application, there is provided a racking structure of the kind specified, wherein each support member is provided with a first leg adapted to be inserted through one of the apertures of a strut and to engage one side of the strut above said aperture, and a supplementary leg adapted to transmit downward loading on the support member to an opposite side the strut below the aperture.
It is one of various objects of this invention to provide alternative support members which may be used in racking structures of the kind specified.
There will now be given detailed descriptions, to be read with reference to the accompanying drawings, of various support members which are illustrative of various aspects of this invention, and which have been selected for the purposes of illustrating the invention by way of example.
In the accompanying drawings, where possible like numerals with an appropriate suffix have been utilised to denote portions which are similar in constructions and/or operation to those present in the support member the subject of said co-pending application.
The support member which is the first embodiment of this invention (Figures I and 2) is formed by effecting a bending operation to a strip of spring steel material, one end proportion 50 being formed into an inverted - U into which the opposite end portion 52 of the strip is iocated, to afford the up-turned leg 30a which may be inserted into the slot 14 of the strut 12.
Extending rearwardly from the end portion 50 is a central portion 28, which in turn extends to a second inverted U-shaped portion which provides the engagement portion 36a over which the aperture 25 of the shelf (not shown) may be located in the manner described in said co-pending application.
Extending downwardly from the portion 30a is an inclined portion 34a, being equivalent to the second supplementary leg, which is connected by a portion 54 to the end portion 52, the portion 54 in use transferring loading applied to the support member against the strut 12.
The second embodiment illustrated in Figure 3 comprises an engagement portion 36b, a second supplementary leg 34b adapted to transmit loading on the support member against the strut at position spaced from the aperture 14, a central portion 28b, and an up-turned leg 30b adopted to engage the inside face 12a of the strut, at a point marginally above the aperture 14. In the second embodiment, the engagement portion 36b extends generally vertically (when the support member is mounted on the strut), but is provided at an upper portion thereof with a barb-like formation 56 over which the aperture in the shelf may be located, involving some resilient deformation of the shelf, whereby subsequent movement of the shelf from the support member is restrained.
The support member which is the second embodiment of the invention is formed by an extrusion operation, conveniently of aluminium.
The third embodiment of the invention illustrated in Figure 4, is similar to the second embodiment above described, other than the second supplementary leg 34c is connected by a web 58 to the central portion 28c, load on the support member being transmitted to the shelf strut by the web 58, the centre of the triangle defined by the central portion 28c inclined leg 34c and web 58 being hollow.
The fouth embodiment of the invention, illustrated in Figures 5 and 6 is somewhat different from the embodiments previously described, inasmuch as the support member is adapted to be interfitted into a strut 12d comprising an aperture afforded by spaced, vertically-extending slots 14d, 14d, (see
Figure 7). The support member which is the fourth embodiment of the invention is formed by bending a piece of stamped steel, illustrated in its blank stage in Figure 5, into the form illustrated in Figure 6, spaced, downwardly-extending legs 32d being inserted into the slots 14d so that spaced limbs 34d engage against the front face of the strut, tansmitting load applied to the central portion 28d of the support member downwardly against the strut, an upwardly-turned portion 36d being provided to locate within the aperture provided in the shelf.
The fifth embodiment illustrated in Figure 8 is similar in basic construction to the fourth embodiment illustrated in Figure 6, but is afforded by a diecasting operation. In the fourth embodiment a generally flat central portion 28e provided, from which an engagement portion 36e extends at a rearward end, a hook-like nose formation 32e being provided at the forward end, which may be inserted downwardly into a conventional aperture 14 provided in a shelf strut, and a rear face 35e of the nose portion transmitting load against the strut at a position beneath the operative thereof.
In the sixth embodiment illustrated inFigures 9 and 10? a generally flat central portion 28f if provided from one side of which an upwardly-extending leg 30f is provided, and from the opposite end, an upwardly-extending engagement portion 36f is provided.
Extending downwardly from the central portion 28f are two generally triangular webs 34f, adapted to transmit loading applied to the support member from the central portion 28f against the face of the strut, by virtue of a side face 35f of'each of the two webs 34f.
The features disclosed in the foregoing description, or the accompanying drawings, expressed in their specific forms or in terms of a means for performing the disclosed function, or a method or process for attaining the disclosed result, or a class or group of substances or compositions, as appropriate, may, separately or in any combination of such features, be utilised for realising the invention in diverse forms thereof.
