Abstract

1,174,520. Pivotable sliding windows. CHUBB'S AUSTRALIAN CO. Ltd. 6 May, 1968 [4 May, 1967; 16 June, 1967], No. 21393/68. Heading E1J. A sliding sash window (balanced by weights 2 in the case shown) has a sash (or both sashes) 16, 17 which can be pivoted about a horizontal axis for cleaning &c. purposes, at its meeting edge 18 and to this end the extreme width from stile to stile of the sash is smaller than the internal distance between the jambs of the main frame, which have dove-tail section groove guiding tracks 11, in a front face plate of the jamb and the sash has a pair of sash supporting members at each end thereof mounted in the stiles, namely firstly runners 28 secured adjustably in the rail 18 to be directly engageable "in and disengageable from the groove 11 and secondly pegs 42, engageable in and disengageable from permanently slidably mounted' nylon block 44 mounted in the jamb track groove 11 (and secured to the balance weights 2 by cables 53) the sash being capable of sideways movement against spring 39 secured at its end 40 in a groove 20 of a stile and having therein an oval aperture 43, Fig. 1A, with an oval insert bush 48 such that normally when the bush has its longest axis vertical as is the axis of the aperture, a slit 49 from the aperture to the lower edge of the block, is closed and when the sash is turned about its axis through the pegs, the latter carry the bush with it and open up the slit 49 to increase the pressure on the sides of the track 1 to hold the sash in its vertical rotated position, the runners 28 being withdrawn by finger grips 29 to allow the rotation about the pegs 42 to take place. Sideways movement of the sash deflects spring 39 and withdraws pegs 42 from the bush and enables the sash to be withdrawn from the frame. Stays may maintain the rotatable sash in a desired angular position. The gap between sash and frame is closed by flexible weatherstrips 24.
