Abstract

1,174,263. Moulding elongated reinforced articles. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 3 Nov., 1967 [10 Nov., 1966], No. 50472/66. Heading B5A. [Also in Division E1] Rigid foamed resin elements, suitable for use in the building industry, include continuous parallel filaments extending longitudinally of the elements. The filaments may be uniformly distributed throughout the cross-section or may have a higher concentration in the regions of higher stress. The foam may be of polyurethane; phenol, urea or melamine formaldehyde; polyester; polyolefine; polyamide; polystyrene; or an epoxy resin. The foam may be made from a reactive liquid precursor, a liquid precursor into which voids have been whipped, fibres which may be converted into foam or already foamed hollow fibres and the filaments may be of glass, rayon carbon, polyamide, polyester, or polyolefine. The precursor may be added to the filaments prior to or during shaping in a mould. In the described embodiment, filament rovings are drawn through a precursor bath, through a die and are wound into a circular hank on a rotating disc provided with spaced pegs. The hank is subsequently removed, reshaped into a long straight configuration, and placed in a P.V.C. lined mould (see Fig. 2, not shown), the foaming and hardening of the resin then being effected.
