Abstract

A curable resin compsn. is allowed to expand and then harden in a mould previously draped with a textile or non woven matting which is readily wetted by the resin, to produce mouldings with a surface rich in resin and locally reinforced by the textile layer. The textile may be a cloth or mat of glass fibres or esp. a non woven mat of polyester fibres such as BIDIM (RTM) in conjunction with a phenol formaldehyde resin solution contg. a blowing agent or acidic reagents. The walls of the mould may be initially coated with a layer of resin no contg. a blowing agent so that the resin zones associated with the surface mats are more dense than the core zones of the moulding. The mould surfaces may be coated or prelined with a parting agent. For mfr. of mouldings with enhanced surface strength or flexural stiffness.
