Abstract

1,174,088. Floating breakwater. NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORP. 2 May, 1968 [2 May, 1967; 8 Nov., 1967], Nos. 20367/67 and 50917/67. Heading E1H. A floating break-water comprises a buoyant body (e.g. a pair of hulls 1, 2) having a length at least twelve times its width and a buoyancy so that it floats with at least 75% of its vertical height submerged, the body carrying a light girder-work stiffening structure (e.g. members 9, 10 and 12) rigidly attached thereto along substantially the whole of its length. The body may carry a vertical baffle 46 along the whole of one edge of its upper surface. The breakwater may also comprise one (or a series) of auxiliary hulls 24 carried to leeward of and separated from the main buoyant body either by a rigid structure (shown) or by a structure comprising, when viewed in plan, a parallelogram linkwork, held in a desired position by ties (e.g. ropes) frompoints 22 and 23 to the ends of members 10 spaced away from members 20 and 21. If a single auxiliary .hull is used if may be' either tubular or else carry a similar structure to the main buoyant body, the auxiliary hull: being about two thirds as long as this body. There may be a catwalk 13 along the top of the stiffening structure.
