Abstract

In order to avoid the necessity of mounting large or heavy objects for movement towards and away from a profile projector, the latter has a lens system comprising a compound lens whose components are so arranged that they may be adjusted in position so that the distance between the object and image planes may be varied without change of magnification. As shown two pairs of components A, B, and A<SP>1</SP>, B<SP>1</SP> are arranged on opposite sides of a negative field flattening member C, C<SP>1</SP>, the back focal plane of A, B, coinciding with the front focal plane of A<SP>1</SP>, B<SP>1</SP> to render the system afocal. Since the combined power of a pair of lenses is a simple function of their two powers and their distance apart, the separation of the object and image planes may be varied by symmetrically altering the separation between the components of the pairs A, B and A<SP>1</SP>, B<SP>1</SP> by moving A and A<SP>1</SP> outwardly and adjusting B and B<SP>1</SP> to maintain the system afocal.
