Abstract
1,173,956. Extensometers. MINISTER OF TECHNOLOGY. Feb. 16, 1968 [March 3, 1967], No. 10247/67. Headings G1M and G1S. [Also in Division G3] An extensometer comprises a valve housing 11 and a support 12 secured in spaced relationship to a structual member 16 and a valve closure member 13 which is moved, when fluid-pressure is applied to the housing, to define a leakage orifice in the housing, the area of the orifice depending on the distance between the housing and the support. Flanges 14 and 15 secure the housing 11 and the support 12 by adhesive to the structural member. Bushes 22, 23 of polytetrafluoroethylene are secured to the member 13 and a spring 24 biases the bushes into sealing engagement with the housing 11 and the support 12. When fluid under pressure is applied to the housing 11 via a pipe 17, the member 13 is deflected downwardly so that the bushes 22, 23 are separated from the housing 11 and the support 12, the lower end 21 of the member 13 engaging a sealing 26 of a bearing 25. The spherical upper end 20 of the member 13 in conjunction with a tapered hole 19 define the leakage orifice so that readings of the pressure on a gauge (not shown) attached to a pipe 18 indicate charges in the distance between the housing 11 and the support 12 during the period of the readings. Temperature compensation may be effected by including a fixed orifice in the pipe 18 and replacing the gauge by flow meters in the pipes 17 and 18 to measure the input and output flow rates.
