Abstract
1,173,426. Silver salt of benzotriazole. FUJI SHASHIN FILM K.K. 12 April, 1967 [12 April, 1966], No. 16749/67. Heading C2C. [Also in Division G2] Crystalline silver salt of benzotriazole is prepared by mixing together (a) a solution of AgNO 3 in a first solvent (A) which is also a solvent for HNO 3 formed in the reaction but which does not substantially dissolve the silver salt of benzotriazole, and (b) a solution of benzotriazole in a second solvent (B) which dissolves 1-30% by wt., based on total wt. of two solvents, of solvent (A) but which does not substantially dissolve the silver salt of benzotriazole, whereby crystals of the required salt are precipitated. Specified solvents (A) are water, dimethylformamide and dimethylsulphoxide. Specified solvents (B) are tricresyl-, monooctyl-dibutyl- and tri-n-butyl phosphate, di-methoxyethyl- and di-n-butyl-phthalate, diethyl sebacate, castor oil, cotton seed oil, linseed oil and camellia oil. The precipitated salt crystals may be washed with a volatile liquid with which both solvents (A) and (B) are completely miscible and which forms a homogeneous ternary mixture with more than 10% by wt. of each of said solvents. Suitable volatile liquids are methanol, ethanol and acetone. The process yields fine crystals of the silver salt of benzotriazole, e.g., spindle-like crystals having a length 0À1-3 microns, which are particularly suitable for use in photographic materials (see Division G2).
