1,173,206. Sulphur dioxide absorption. BADISCHE ANILIN-& SODA-FABRIK A.G. 29 March, 1967 [30 March, 1966], No. 14265/67. Heading B1L. Sulphur dioxide is removed from flue gas by absorption in a solvent which is a cyclic imide of a dicarboxylic acid in which the imide hydrogen is replaced by a substituent of general formula -(CH 2 ) n OR in which n is an integer from 1-10 and R is alkyl, aryl or cycloalkyl. The imide is liquid at the temperature of the gas to be purified. Sulphur dioxide may be recovered from the solution by blowing with inert gas, heat or reduction of pressure. Compounds may be added to lower the vapour pressure of the solvent, e.g. adipodiamide and compounds thereof bearing substituents or nitrogen. The preferred cyclic imides are compounds of succinic, glutaric or orthophthalic acids.
