Abstract

1,172,882. Automatic control systems for anodic passivation. ESSO RESEARCH & ENG. CO. March 28, 1967, No.13997/67. Heading G3R. An anodic passivation system to prevent corrosion of a bayonet heater 32 immersed in acid 34 comprises a cathode 33, reference electrode 39, a D.C. source 31, a potentiostat 30 and a voltage responsive contactor 42, 44, the settings of members 30, 42 being such that members 30, 31 are parallel connected to supply the current necessary to bring the heater 32 to a potential corresponding to slow or instantaneous passivation, Fig.1 (not shown), after which the contacts 44 open to disconnect the source 31 and the potentiostat 30 supplies the reduced current necessary to maintain the passive condition of the heater 32, i.e. to maintain the potential between members 32, 39 in a predetermined range. The above cycle is repeated should contacts 44 reclose as a result of altered conditions at heater 32, e.g. changes of temperature and solution concentration. The system may be simplified by replacing members 42, 44 by a conventional non-automatic switch, Fig.2 (not shown). A typical application of the invention using a conventional D.C. source and potentiostat is described for steady state (slow) operation to bring the heater into the passive potential range.
