Abstract

In an installation of the type including a bath for the metallic plating of articles by chemical action, those metal surfaces in contact with the bath which have to be protected against unwanted plating are included in an anodic passivation system, the anodic potential of the protected surfaces being automatically maintained at the necessary value by a feedback control circuit. As shown, a plating bath having a metallic surface which has to remain unplated contains a plating liquid in which are immersed a reference electrode 2 and a cathode 11. The voltage ui between the said surface and the electrode 2 is compared in a differential amplifier 1 with a reference voltage derived from a transformer winding 3 by way of a rectifier 4, a capacitor 5, a resistor 6, a Zener diode 7 and a potentiometer 8; any resulting error signal is applied to transistors 9, 10, which are connected as a Darlington pair and which control the passivating current flowing between the surface and the cathode 11 in such a manner that the surface is maintained at the desired positive potential. The passivating current is derived from a transformer winding 12 by way of a rectifier 13 and a capacitor 14. Batteries 17, 18 associated with a relay 19 provides a standby power supply should there be a mains failure.
