Abstract

1,172,228. Microwave heating. HIRST (MICROWAVE HEATING) Ltd. 8 Nov., 1967 [10 Nov., 1966], No. 50399/66. Heading H5H. [Also in Division H1] In a microwave heating device comprising a serpentine waveguide formed by two trays hinged together, each tray is formed from a plurality of metal bars 11 interleaved with a plurality of removable upstanding, metal wall elements 12, and a plurality of metal blocks 15, each of which is seated on the ends of two adjacent metal bars 11. The bars 11, removable wall elements 12 and metal end blocks 15 define a serpentine channel and are secured together by tie-rods 18 and to channel section members 17 by bolts 16. Adjacent wall elements 12 are arranged with their stepped ends 13 (Fig. 2) reversed so that a gap is provided between the wall element andmetal block 15. Both trays, only one being shown in Fig. 1, are mounted on a hinge plate 21 so that when the trays are closed a slot is formed transverse to wall elements 12 through which paper or sheet material may be passed. A safety switch cuts off the microwave supply when the trays are opened for the insertion of sheet material. The hinge plates are slotted at 24 for connection to a magnetron and water load respectively. The magnetron may be matched to its aperture 24 by means of a tapered transition or by means of a quarterwave step-transformer (Fig. 5, not shown). An adjustable matching stub may be provided to allow the water load (Fig. 6, not shown) to be matched with the waveguide. The bars 11 are provided with holes 30 through which air is blown on to the sheet material to remove vapour. The air is preferably preheated by an infra-red heating element before being passed through the holes 30 which are preferably fitted with nozzles to function as an " air knife." The bars 11 may be replaced with rectangular tubes having air holes on their inner sides.
