In a briquetting apparatus for forming cylinders from wood shavings, the pressure applied to the press at any time is determined by the distance between the dies; the greater the die separation, the less the maximum pressure. As described, the apparatus comprises a split cylinder enclosed by tong halves 2, 3 hinged at 4. The tong arms 5, 6 are connected by piston 10 and cylinder 9, the arms being biased in the open position by spring 13. The operating medium leaves cylinder 9 through hole 16 and enters through hole 15 via a control device 18 which is actuated by rod 19 attached at 20 to arm 5. Valve 18 is arranged so that the flow of liquid through it increases as the arms 5 and 6 get closer together, the pressure exerted on the material in the cylinder 1 thereby increasing. The pressure device may be a pneumatic or hydraulic cylinder or an electromagnet or electric motor and the control device a valve either manually or electrically operated or by an electronic sensor operated by a variable inductor or capacitor. When used for soft wood shavings which are readily compressible the final pressure exerted on the cylinder is greater than with less compressible hard wood shavings; in both cases a solid mass is formed.
