Abstract

[Also in Division E1] A concrete "room" unit is moulded by the successive casting in a horizontal position of each of four sequential faces thereof, around two spaced prefabricated end walls which may incorporate window and door openings, by using a mould which is rotatable through 90 degrees about a horizontal axis after each face has set. The mould comprises a cavity defined by assembled opposed pairs of face-forming walls 29 and 32 provided with a number of laterally outwardlyextending bracing elements 30, 33, respectively, which define a circular periphery and which rest on rollers 28, one of which is driven by a motor whereby the mould is intermittently rotated through 90 degrees. The mould is provided with raised portions 35 for forming ribs on the corresponding walls, floor or ceiling of the completed unit. Steel elements for connection to other units and reinforcement, which may be continuous for the four faces to be cast, are located in the mould. After the unit is moulded, a mould wall 32, corresponding to the floor of the unit, is removed in the uppermost position and replaced by a handling element 40 which locates roller assemblies 39 in moulded recesses 37. The rollers 39 locate on rails 42 on the element 40 whereby, after rotation thereof through 180 degrees to the lowermost position, the moulded unit may be transported along rails 45 abutting the rails 42 to a finishing station where joinery, sinks, baths, lavatories, piping, wiring, and floor coverings may be incorporated and the unit glazed and painted. The handling element 40 may alternatively be dispensed with when the mould is mounted for rotation on rollers supported on a travelling platform (Fig. 1, not shown), whereby the unit is conveyed to the finishing station.
