[Also in Division D1] Twisted fibrous articles such as yarns, strands, cords, twines and ropes are made from fibrillated polyethylene - 1: 2 - diphenoxyethane - 4: 4<SP>1</SP>- dicarboxylate. Fibrillation is effected by drawing an extruded film or tape of the latter substance at least three times its original length in the longitudinal direction, heating the film or tape while under tension to a temperature of from 85‹ to 240‹ C. and twisting it about its longitudinal axis, the time of heating being such that the article is fibrillated. Heat treatment may be applied either before or after the twisting, or the heating and twisting operations may be carried out simultaneously. In the twisting operation the film to be twisted is restrained at a fixed point from the wind-up bobbin and is led on to the bobbin by a "traveller or "flyer" device. The fixed point may comprise nip rollers or a set of anchor rollers or it may be a compression die, e.g. of circular cross-section, through which the film is drawn.
