Abstract
580,971. Yarns &c. RUTISHAUSER, G. April 21, 1943, No. 6391. [A Specification was laid open to inspection under Sect. 91 of the Acts, Nov. 10, 1943.] [Classes 120 (i) and 120 (iii)] Curled woollike twisted yarns of continuous curled or crimped filaments, the yarn having approximately the same weight per metre run as the initial filament bundle, are manufactured by curling or crimping the bundle of continuous filaments and then mechanically loosening or opening the bundle so as to displace the individual crimped filaments longitudinally and transversely so that the mass of filaments acquires a volume at least fifteen times larger than that of the initial bundle the loosened bundle then being slightly twisted without drawing or stretching to convert it into yarn. The filament bundles may consist of natural or artificial silk and the loosening may increase the volume of the fibre mass up to 30-40 times. In one apparatus the bundle of curled filaments 5 are unwound from a hank 4 mechanically loosened or opened at 6 rounded by the rubbers 8 and twisted and wound at 9. The curled filament band is preferably loosened between two movable members covered with velvet, leather or plush, e.g., by passing between a comb rapidly reciprocated over a roller or drum covered with velvet, plush or card wire. After loosening on this apparatus the filament band may receive a false twist and then pass through calender rollers to be twisted and wound by a ring and traveller.
