Abstract

1,171,356. Self locking screw threads. REPUBLIC INDUSTRIAL CORP. 23 March, 1967 [17 Aug., 1966], No. 13684/67. Heading F2H. A screw 10 has a standard root lead along the entire length of its threaded portion and at least a section of the threaded portion is shaped so that the entire radial depth of the section radi ally outwardly of the standard lead root is dis. placed with respect to the standard root lead, thus forming a locking thread portion. As shown, twc locking thread turns 14 are produced by a rolling or similar operation in which the crown edge 15 of each turn 14 is deflected to alter the lead of the thread. In a modification, the upper flank of each locking thread turn 14 is undercut to allow the thread to be more easily deflected from the standard lead. The locking portion may extend for a fraction of a thread turn, a single turn, a number of turns or the full length of the thread. Each thread of a multi-start thread may be provided with a locking portion.
