Abstract

Apparatus for abrading the surface of a workpiece comprises a conveyer 27 for moving the workpiece beneath an endless band 21 of abrasive material movable in a direction transverse to that of the conveyer, pressure means for pressing the endless band against the workpiece, and a carrier frame 1 for the pressure means extending in the direction of movement of the conveyer and having a width exceeding the width of the endless band. The conveyer is driven in the direction of the arrow 6 and the conveyer band and the workpiece are supported at the abrading station by rolls 24, 25. The abrasive band 21 is supported on pulleys 28 and a guide roller 29 and is backed by a steel pressure band 20, a felt cloth being interleaved between the abrasive band and pressure band. The carrier frame 1 carries a pair of pivots 3, 3<SP>1</SP> on each of which are pivoted a plurality of members 2, 2<SP>1</SP>. Each member has arms 4, 4<SP>1</SP>, 5, 5<SP>1</SP>, 8, 8<SP>1</SP>, the arms 4, 4<SP>1</SP> of corresponding pairs of the members being interconnected by rods 10, the arms 5, 5<SP>1</SP> being interconnected by frames 12, and the arms 8, 8<SP>1</SP> supporting rollers 9, 9<SP>1</SP>. Rods 15, 151 extend downwardly through slots in the frames 12 and at their lower ends are joined by bridges 17 and carry pressure rollers 16, 16<SP>1</SP>. An elastic element 18 presses the rollers against the abrasive band, the element acting on bridging members 17 interconnecting the pairs of rods 15, 15<SP>1</SP>. Stops limit the downward movement of the rollers 16, 16<SP>1</SP> and a spring 13 urges the rollers 9, 9<SP>1</SP> into a lower position determined by a stop 14. In operation, when a workpiece 7 approaches the abrading station, a roller 22 raises the workpiece into engagement with the abrasive band and the sensing rollers 91 which, through the linkage system also raises rollers 9, and lowers the frames 12 so that the pressure element 18 urges the associated pressure rollers 16 against the abrasive band. When the end of the workpiece reaches the edge of the band, roller 22 is lowered to prevent overabrading of the edge of the workpiece. Abrading is only effected by the part of the belt urged downwardly by the rollers 16, 16<SP>1</SP> actuated by the rollers 9, 9<SP>1</SP> engaging the workpiece so that the longitudinal edges of the workpiece are not rounded.
