Abstract
979,100. Grinding. P. ERNST. Oct. 17, 1963, No. 41030/63. Heading B3D. [Also in Division B8] A device for automatically pressing plateshaped workpieces 7, Fig. 1, against, and removing them from, a working tool 12, such as a grinding or polishing roller or a brush, after the leading edge of the workpiece has run under and before the trailing edge thereof has run out from under the working tool, comprises a conveyer belt 1 for carrying the workpiece under the tool, pressure rollers 5, 6 for pressing the workpiece on to the belt, and a rocking element 4 pivotable about a pivot axle 11 arranged underneath the belt and parallel with the tool, said element carrying two rotatable guide rollers 2, 3 mounted one on each of the side of the pivot axle and bearing against the underside of the belt. As the workpiece is moved through the machine in the direction of the arrow 8, the roller 6, which may be spring or weight actuated, presses the workpiece against a table 10 beneath the conveyer. The leading end of the workpiece then acts to press the roller 2 downwardly and passes beneath the working roller 12. The workpiece is not engaged with the roller 12 until its leading end has also engaged the roller 3 which causes the element 4 to move to a horizontal position with the consequent raising of the workpiece into engagement with the working roller. As soon as the trailing end of the workpiece leaves the roller 2, the element 4 rocks in the opposite direction to prevent engagement of the trailing end of the workpiece with the roller 12. The arrangement prevents excessive abrasion and damage of the leading and trailing ends of the workpiece. In another embodiment having a relatively stiff conveyer belt, the rollers 2a, 3a, Fig. 4, are mounted on a plate 14 pivotable about an axle 11a, the plate also having a roller 13 about which the belt is guided.
