Abstract

1,170,766. Making O-rings; seaming non-metallic sheet material. A. W. CHESTERTON CO. 13 Oct., 1966 [21 Oct., 1965], No. 43883/66. Headings B5A and B5K. [Also in Division F2] A plastics-covered 0-ring is made by deep drawing a circular ring of C-shaped cross-section from a thin disc of plastics material, severing the ring from the rest of the disc, inserting the O- ring within the severed ring, and finally sealing the edges of the severed ring to completely encase the 0-ring. The drawing is effected between a fixed base member 22, having a spring-biased male ring mould 24, and a movable female member 20 having an annular cavity 42 to which a heated pressure fluid can be supplied. In operation, member 20 is lowered to clamp the disc between rings 21 and 29, and rings 41 and 23 after which the disc is heated. Member 20 is then further lowered to draw the disc over the mould 24 and fluid under pressure subsequently supplied to the cavity 42 to apply the sheet tightly over the enlarged head of the mould, the pressure being sufficient to force the mould downwardly against the action of springs 34. The member 20 is finally withdrawn and the formed sheet, supported by the mould 24, removed for the subsequent severing operation. The severing is effected by drawing the sheet, whilst supported on the mould, between a pair of rotating cutting rolls 62 and 64 which engage either side of the drawn ring 15. The wheels are provided with cutting knives 63 and 65 respectively, the wheel 62 being mounted upon a fixed table 60 through a gear 67 and the wheel 64 being mounted upon a lever 61 pivotable to move the wheel into and out of engagement with ring 15. The wheel 64 is driven, in its operative position, by means of a second gear 67 which engages that of wheel 62. The severed ring is subsequently removed from the mould, the 0-ring inserted into it and the whole transferred to a sealing device. The sealing is effected by locating the sheathed 0-ring within a cavity formed between members 72, 68; 71 and 71<SP>1</SP> (see Fig. 17) and welding the overlapping edges of the ring 15 using a heated upper member having an annular pressing ring 75. The edges of the ring 15 are cut in such a way that when they are overlapped and sealed the outer sheath formed by ring 15 is smooth surfaced and perfectly round (see Figs. 18 and 19, not shown). Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 1,103,979.
