Abstract

1,170,752. Working polymeric materials; cutting. DUNLOP CO. Ltd. 21 March, 1967 [24 March, 1966], No. 12970/66. Heading B5A. Articles formed at least in part of a polymeric material are worked, i.e. buffed, cut, trimmed or profiled by applying to the surface of the article a fluid jet whose kinetic energy per second per unit cross-sectional area is at least 10<SP>5</SP> joules per sq. cm. The jet is preferably water, but for use on unvulcanized rubber may be a solvent therefore e.g. petroleum naphtha. It may have a circular or substantially linear cross-section and may be continuous or in pulses of preferably 0À7 sec. duration. The pulses may be produced by a low pressure air supply (30-200 p.s.i.) acting on a large diameter piston, which in turn acts upon a small diameter piston in a lowpressure fluid supply line. The apparatus may be used for forming articles with a complex profile, machining treads in unvulcanized tyres, cutting continuous lengths of sheet material and forming recesses in the articles.
