Abstract

Mfr. of blow moulded containers having an enhanced strength/wt. ratio (specific strength) due to use of longitudinal and/or circumferential grooves on the inner and/or outer surfaces. Longitudinal grooves are generated by using parison extrusion dies and/or mandrels in with surface ribs parallel to the extrusion axis. Transverse ribs are produced by applying a rotary cutter to the parison surfaces during extrusion. Internal transverse cuts are made using an inclined rotary tool mounted on a shaft coaxial with the core mandrel and driven by a worm drive passing through one of the mandrel supports. Dies are suitable for mfr. of mouldings having a cellular appearance and texture. The degree of weight redn. and the surface texture can be varied, esp. by controlling use of the rotary cutting tool(s). The effective parison wall thickness cna also thus be varied along its length. Interchangeable cam pillars can be used to adjust blade inclination to suit different extrusion rates or groove patterns.
