Abstract
1,170,689. Refractory blocks; discharging glass melting furnaces. CORNING GLASS WORKS. 6 Sept., 1967, No. 40743/67. Heading F4B. A method of manufacturing a refractory article, e.g. a lip block or an orifice ring for the delivery system of a glass melting furnace, comprises cladding the refractory backing with a thin sheet of refractory metal, e.g. Pt or a Pt alloy, and evacuating the encapsulated refractory. The cladding is formed with an evacuation tube the walls of which may be compressed to seal it, and said cladding may also be hydrostatically pressed against the refractory. Evacuation of the cladding may be continued during passage of the molten glass.
