Racemic and optically active compounds of the general Formula (I) (A = CH 2 , CHOH, CO; R<SP>1</SP> = lower alkyl, alkenyl, alkynyl; R<SP>2</SP> = allyl, propargyl, cyclopropylmethyl, each optionally lower alkylsubstituted) and their acid addition salts are prepared by (a) reducing a compound of the Formula (II) (A<SP>1</SP> = CH 2 ); (b) reacting a compound of the Formula (III) with R<SP>2</SP>X (X = halogen); (c) reacting a compound of the Formula (V) with H<SP>2</SP>NH 2 ; or (d) reducing a compound of the Formula VII) (R<SP>3</SP> = cyclopropyl, optionally lower alkyl-substituted), optionally followed by reduction of CO to CHOH, salt formation and/or resolution. The lower alkyl groups contain 1-7 carbon atoms, and the lower alkenyl and alkynyl groups contain up to 6 carbon atoms. The preparation of starting materials of Formulµ (II), (III), (V) and (VII) and of 3 - allyloxyphenylacetone, 3 - propargyloxyphenylacetone, 3 - propargyloxybenzaldehyde, 3<SP>1</SP>- methoxy - 2 - phthalimidopropiophenone and 2- amino - 3<SP>1</SP>- methoxypropiophenone hydrochloride is described. The compounds of the invention are hypertensive agents and may be administered in the form of pharmaceutical preparations containing them, with or without other (unspecified) active ingredients, in association with an excipient or carrier.
